Reis, and Susan Sprecher Read the Full Text Many of us enter the dating pool looking for that special someone, but finding a romantic partner can be difficult. In this new report, Eli J. Finkel Northwestern University , Paul W. Reis University of Rochester , and Susan Sprecher Illinois State University take a comprehensive look at the access, communication, and matching services provided by online dating sites. Although the authors find that online dating sites offer a distinctly different experience than conventional dating, the superiority of these sites is not as evident. Dating sites provide access to more potential partners than do traditional dating methods, but the act of browsing and comparing large numbers of profiles can lead individuals to commoditize potential partners and can reduce their willingness to commit to any one person. Communicating online can foster intimacy and affection between strangers, but it can also lead to unrealistic expectations and disappointment when potential partners meet in real life. As online dating matures, however, it is likely that more and more people will avail themselves of these services, and if development — and use — of these sites is guided by rigorous psychological science, they may become a more promising way for people to meet their perfect partners. Social trends Since the s, Internet dating has become more popular with smartphones. The stigma associated with online dating dropped over the years and people view online dating more positively. Further, during this period, the usage among to year-olds tripled, while that among to year-olds doubled. Online introduction services In , a variation of the online dating model emerged in the form of introduction sites, where members have to search and contact other members, who introduce them to other members whom they deem compatible.
Introduction sites differ from the traditional online dating model, and attracted a large number of users and significant investor interest. Such sites earn revenue from a mix of advertising and sale of additional options. This model also allows users to switch between free and paying status at will, with sites accepting a variety of online currencies and payment options.
Since advertising revenues are modest compared to membership fees, this model requires a large number of page views to achieve profitability. However, Sam Yagan describes dating sites as ideal advertising platforms because of the wealth of demographic data made available by users. While some sites conduct background checks on members, many do not, resulting in some uncertainty around members’ identities.
For instance, some profiles may not represent real humans but rather “bait profiles” placed online by site owners to attract new paying members, or “spam profiles” created by advertisers to market services and products.

Abstract Social Networking Sites SNSs are virtual communities where users can create individual public profiles, interact with real-life friends, and meet other people based on shared interests. However, the contemporary scientific literature addressing the addictive qualities of social networks on the Internet is scarce. Therefore, this literature review is intended to provide empirical and conceptual insight into the emerging phenomenon of addiction to SNSs by: The findings indicate that SNSs are predominantly used for social purposes, mostly related to the maintenance of established offline networks.
Moreover, extraverts appear to use social networking sites for social enhancement, whereas introverts use it for social compensation, each of which appears to be related to greater usage, as does low conscientiousness and high narcissism. Negative correlates of SNS usage include the decrease in real life social community participation and academic achievement, as well as relationship problems, each of which may be indicative of potential addiction.
Instead of supporting her child, she spends her time chatting and browsing the social networking site [ 1 ]. This case, while extreme, is suggestive of a potential new mental health problem that emerges as Internet social networks proliferate. Newspaper stories have also reported similar cases, suggesting that the popular press was early to discern the potentially addictive qualities of social networking sites SNS; i.
Such media coverage has alleged that women are at greater risk than men for developing addictions to SNSs [ 4 ].
Dating goes social
Sociology is a branch of the social sciences that uses systematic methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop and refine a body of knowledge about human social structure and activity, sometimes with the goal of applying such knowledge to the pursuit of government policies designed to benefit the general social welfare. Its subject matter ranges from the micro level to the macro level.
Micro-sociology involves the study of people in face-to-face interactions. Macro-sociology involves the study of widespread social processes. Sociology is a broad discipline in terms of both methodology and subject matter.
Psychology, scientific discipline that studies mental states and processes and behaviour in humans and other animals.. Technology Eli Finkel, a social psychologist at Northwestern University, is one of five authors on a new study in Psychological Science in the Public Interest. We invited our Facebook and Twitter followers to submit their questions on love, relationships and online dating to Finkel. Here is the second part of his response. This is a fascinating question, but, to date, an unanswered one. My guess is that people who have faith in the algorithm will indeed experience greater attraction to an algorithm-selected match than they would have if that same person had been selected at random.
What is unknown to date is the degree to which that artificially elevated initial attraction is likely to yield long-term relationship well-being or disappointment. What would you choose to put on a questionnaire if you were writing one? I would scour the relationships literature to discern those factors that are known to be especially relevant to long-term relationship well-being. One efficient means of doing this would be to build a site that resides more-or-less at the intersection of speed-dating, traditional online dating like the early iterations of Match.
In addition, computer software and, pending resource availability, perhaps human observers would code each dyadic interaction for things like facial expressions, word usage, affective tone, etc. Next, all of this dyadic information would be incorporated into an algorithm that would use established relationship science to develop a compatibility index. Finally, the site would invest considerable resources to follow up with its users after they went on dates together, collecting data that would be crucial in refining the algorithm.
